About this bottle

A rye whiskey from United States from Wilderness Trail, Wilderness Trail Small Batch Rye is part of the Spirit Hives whiskey selection. It is bottled at 50% ABV, in a 700 ml bottle. Producer tasting notes — on the nose: Lemon peels, zesty satsuma, and crisp apple bring fruity balance to woody rye spice. Soft notes of vanilla caramel and floral honey drift in the distance; on the palate: More citrus zest keeps things zingy with toasted rye bread and spiced butter in tow. Charred oak and butterscotch are followed by hints of liquorice and pepper; finish: That peppery heat takes hold on the finish, green peppers, and crushed peppercorns tangle with sweet toffee and orchard fruits.

Serving & pairing

Rye’s peppery spice is the classic base for a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned. Pairs well with charcuterie and dark chocolate.

Rye versus bourbon — what is the difference?

Both are American whiskeys aged in new charred oak. Bourbon must be at least 51% corn, which gives sweetness; rye must be at least 51% rye grain, which gives pepper, spice and a drier finish. Canadian whisky is often called “rye” by tradition even when the mash bill contains little rye.

First Scotch

Peat without the leap of faith.

“I wanted Islay without buying a wall of smoke. The tasting notes on Spirit Hives pointed to a gentler malt. It opened a door instead of slamming one.”
Jonah K.Islay single malt
Advent calendar

Advent, then a full-size bottle.

“Twenty-four small pours, each with a card. December at our house became a ritual, and we already know which Spirit Hives bottles we are buying properly in January.”

Retirement gift

A retirement bottle with a box.

“Twenty-five years deserved a twenty-five-year Scotch. Spirit Hives sent it in the producer's presentation box. The whole office signed the card around it.”

Whisky club

Cask strength, labelled as such.

“ABV and proof on the card, so I knew I was buying 58 percent and could plan the water. Big, oily, brilliant. Exactly what Spirit Hives said it was.”
