About this bottle
A cask strength rye whiskey from United States, Thirteenth Colony Cask Strength Rye Whiskey is part of the Spirit Hives whiskey selection. It is bottled at 47.5% ABV, in a 750 ml bottle. Producer tasting notes — on the nose: Caramel, brown sugar, nutmeg, and clove. As it opens up, aromas of vanilla, hazelnut cream, port wine, and coffee beans emerge; on the palate: Starts with clove and pepper spice, then the rye grain becomes more pronounced. Toasted whole grain bread, praline, and maple flavours follow through, finishing with vanilla cookies and toasted almonds; finish: Long and coating. Rye oils linger on the palate; flavors shift toward cooked dates, sugar plum, raisins, and a hint of root beer in the tail.

Serving & pairing
Rye’s peppery spice is the classic base for a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned. Pairs well with charcuterie and dark chocolate.
Rye versus bourbon — what is the difference?
Both are American whiskeys aged in new charred oak. Bourbon must be at least 51% corn, which gives sweetness; rye must be at least 51% rye grain, which gives pepper, spice and a drier finish. Canadian whisky is often called “rye” by tradition even when the mash bill contains little rye.
