About this bottle
A scotch whisky from Scotland, Macallan 1990 SMS The Whisky Trail Bottled 2009 is part of the Spirit Hives whiskey selection. It is bottled at 43% ABV. Producer tasting notes — on the nose: Quite big rich presence, with quite deep syrup, hazelnut and a hint of molasses initially. Strong ground coffee aromas, dusted with cocoa powder and underpinned by powerful but not over-riding oak. A quite serious and intricate nose, demanding attention; on the palate: Sweeter than expected initially, a very pleasant intermingling of the flavours from the nose, with cocoa, honey and hazelnut syrup most prominent. The nuttiness increases through the middle; finish: Warm, drying and incredibly moreish as the oak slowly fades. Ginger snaps and spices. Tremendous stuff, and another superb autumn dram, perfect for returning after a long walk or post-supper.

Serving & pairing
Serve neat with a few drops of water to open the aromas. Lighter styles suit smoked salmon and shortbread; peated styles suit blue cheese and oysters.
Single malt or blended Scotch?
Single malt means one distillery, 100% malted barley, pot stills. Blended Scotch mixes malt whisky from several distilleries with lighter grain whisky, aiming for consistency and approachability. Blended malt (no grain whisky) sits between the two. Neither is inherently better; single malts show one distillery’s character while good blends show balance.
