About this bottle

A single malt Scotch whisky from Scotland, Ardmore Traditional Cask Peated Single Malt Scotch Whisky is part of the Spirit Hives whiskey selection. It is bottled at 46% ABV, in a 750 ml bottle. Producer tasting notes — on the nose: Full of caramel. Toasted oak is evident and rich and just the faintest peat has muscled its way through; on the palate: Lots of barley and cereal notes, oodles of rich bourbon, smoke and peat still present. Charming interplay through the caramel sweetness and the vanilla spiced oak; finish: Has a sharp edge, more caramel and sugary barley notes and a lanolin smoothness and more tapering smoke.

Serving & pairing

Serve neat with a few drops of water to open the aromas. Lighter styles suit smoked salmon and shortbread; peated styles suit blue cheese and oysters.

Single malt or blended Scotch?

Single malt means one distillery, 100% malted barley, pot stills. Blended Scotch mixes malt whisky from several distilleries with lighter grain whisky, aiming for consistency and approachability. Blended malt (no grain whisky) sits between the two. Neither is inherently better; single malts show one distillery’s character while good blends show balance.

Retirement gift

A retirement bottle with a box.

“Twenty-five years deserved a twenty-five-year Scotch. Spirit Hives sent it in the producer's presentation box. The whole office signed the card around it.”

Cask strength, labelled as such.

“ABV and proof on the card, so I knew I was buying 58 percent and could plan the water. Big, oily, brilliant. Exactly what Spirit Hives said it was.”

A treat

Japanese whisky I could actually pay for.

“I lined up three blends, saw the sizes and the prices, and picked the 700 ml I could afford. Spirit Hives did not hide the cost. No regrets.”

Wishlist haul

Saved three, bought three.

“A month of adding bottles to the Spirit Hives wishlist, then I checked out the three I kept opening. Sherried Speyside, a rye, a Rioja. All three matched the page.”
