About this bottle

Ardbeg Rare Cask #1981 42 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a single malt Scotch whisky from Scotland made by Ardbeg. It is bottled at 45.3% ABV, carrying a 42-year age statement, in a 700 ml bottle. Producer tasting notes — on the nose: Delicate and impressive depth on the nose; on the palate: A rich, warming and peppery mouthfeel leads into a symphony of incredible flavours – soft burnished leather, aniseed, toffee, demerara sugar and a gentle tarry smoke flavour. Then the spices appear; clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and some sweet, malty biscuity notes; finish: The finish, which is soothing and gentle, goes on forever, with a balanced combination of dates, toffee, leather and creosote.

Serving & pairing

Serve neat with a few drops of water to open the aromas. Lighter styles suit smoked salmon and shortbread; peated styles suit blue cheese and oysters.

Single malt or blended Scotch?

Single malt means one distillery, 100% malted barley, pot stills. Blended Scotch mixes malt whisky from several distilleries with lighter grain whisky, aiming for consistency and approachability. Blended malt (no grain whisky) sits between the two. Neither is inherently better; single malts show one distillery’s character while good blends show balance.

A treat

Japanese whisky I could actually pay for.

“I lined up three blends, saw the sizes and the prices, and picked the 700 ml I could afford. Spirit Hives did not hide the cost. No regrets.”
Ken A.Japanese blended whisky
Wishlist haul

Saved three, bought three.

“A month of adding bottles to the Spirit Hives wishlist, then I checked out the three I kept opening. Sherried Speyside, a rye, a Rioja. All three matched the page.”
Matej N.Three bottles
Rare find

The bottle my town does not stock.

“Spirit Hives had the small-batch bourbon I had only ever seen on holiday. I ordered it on a Tuesday and it was on the table for Sunday. That is why I came back.”
Marcus T.Small-batch bourbon
Birthday gift

Quick to order. Worth the wait.

“Checkout at Spirit Hives took a minute. The bottle itself took a little longer than a supermarket run. I ordered ahead for my brother's birthday and it arrived in time.”
